ENROLLED AGENT: WHAT IS IT?
An Enrolled Agent is a person licensed by the Department of the Treasury and authorized to represent and appear in place of the taxpayer in matters before the Internal Revenue Service. An Enrolled Agent is one of three federally authorized tax practitioners, the other two being Attorneys and Certified Public Accountants. Since the Enrolled Agent license is issued by the U. S. Government, Enrolled Agents may practice in any state.
Enrolled Agents specialize in matters of taxation. To become licensed, a person must pass a 16 hour test given on two consecutive days, covering all kinds of taxation, individual, corporation, partnerships, estates and trusts. The test is designed, administered, and scored by the Internal Revenue Service (which is probably why there are so few of us). After passing the test the applicant has to pass an extensive background check. To maintain the license the IRS requires 24 hours per year of continuing education. However, to maintain membership in our professional group, the National Association of Enrolled Agents, requires 30 hours per year, in seminars taught by certified instructors. That is what it takes to be a professional in the ever changing field of tax law.
SERVICES OFFERED:
Preparation of tax returns including individual, corporation, partnership, fiduciary, and estate, and non-profit returns is offered throughout the year. My special area of interest is small businesses, including home based business. I answer all correspondence from the IRS, represent clients at audit, negotiate payment plans, and represent taxpayers for offers in compromise. I prepare a large number of state returns for clients not resident in Hawaii and I also prepare tax returns for non-resident aliens.
My office also provides many bookkeeping services, including payroll and payroll tax reporting. We have relationships with several CPA firms if your financial statements require certification. We also provide fiscal management for condominium associations, in partnership with a real estate broker who provides the property management.
A LEAD:
I prefer clients who wish to establish a long term relationship with a professional advisor. A tax return prepared with the best results for the taxpayer is the end result of a process of communication, planning, and actions taken throughout the year. Little is gained from praying that your accountant will wave a magic wand on April 15!
